This week is kinda crazy for me but I'm so excited — Adrian and I are taking a mini vacation to Portland, OR tomorrow through the weekend! I've never been before and have heard so many fun facts about the city (mostly that it's hipster like my Austin hometown!). Even bigger news is that it's our first vacation without the kids. My parents offered to help take care of them for the 3 days that we'll be away and even though I'm glad that it'll give Adrian and I some time to ourselves, I'm already starting to miss them! We already have a couple ideas for our itinerary, but if you all have any recommendations on places to see or eat, please send them my way!
I wore this dress last weekend for a 10-course meal we had at one of our favorite sushi restaurants in Dallas, Uchi. I can't recommend the "omakase" meal option enough as it basically lets the chef pick out the best items on their menu to serve you. Each course is super small (mostly consisting of just a couple bites and meant for sharing). I can't recommend this dress enough as it's such a pretty print that's perfect for transitioning into the fall and the swingy ruffle style is just loose enough to give you room to move / breath while still having a feminine shape.
This dress is perfect for all occasions — I wore it for a date night out but it'd also be great for brunches, errands, or even just a casual day at the office! Drop waist dresses can be a little tricky to wear, so I'm sharing my top 5 tips below:
1. Ideal for those who are large busted or have broad shoulders. I was talking with a co-worker the other day and she mentioned that she struggles with finding styles that flatter her larger bust. Although my bust has since shrunk since I stopped breastfeeding, I have a somewhat similar problem as I have an inverted triangle body type with broader shoulders. Since drop waist dresses hit at around the hips, they will tend to accentuate the lower half of your body and is perfect to balance out those of us who are more top heavy!
2. Pair with nude shoes. The drop waist dresses hem can also have the side effect of making legs look a little shorter. Unless you're super leggy, I would recommend pairing with a pair of shoes that will create the illusion of a longer legline. Shoes in a color that matches your skin tone and with a bit of a heel will give you the look of just a couple more inches!
3. Go for a slightly shorter hemline. Because drop waist dresses can shorten the look of your legs, choose a style with slightly shorter hemline. If you're petite, I would recommend a style that hits just above the knee. If the dress comes in a petite sizing option, maybe consider opting it and seeing if it works out better even!
4. Go for cropped layers. With Fall around the corner, it can be fun to layer your drop-waist dress too! I recommend going for a cropped jacket or blazer like this one from BB Dakota so you get some waistline definition and a style that won't interfere with the ruffles of the drop-waist style.
5. Play up accessories. And finally, have fun with accessories, especially statement earrings and necklaces! Adding a pop of detail up top will help balance out the details of the drop-waist dress and draw attention back to the face. Below are a few of my favorite statement styles:
Jacket: BB Dakota 'Peppin' Moto Jacket –40% off!
Dress: LOFT 'Autumn Dream' Dress – runs big / wearing XXSP,30% off! (blouse option)
Shoes: Jessica Simpson 'Aggie' (old, similar, similar)
Bag: Gucci 'Soho Disco' (similar –on sale!)
Earrings: J.Crew Double Hoop (sold out, similar, similar)
Sunglasses: WearMe Pro 'Eva' c/o (similar)
And lastly, LOFT is having a 30% off sale with no code needed! I just picked up this striped top and this pretty tie skirt (so excited to wear this for fall!). I also own this striped sweater which I highly recommend (see on me)!
